This naturally occuring mineral is also known as "Fairy Stone" or "Lucky Cross". These specimens consist of twinned staurolite crystals simulating a cross on a matrix. The unusual stones are found in Russia, Virginia, Austria, France and Scotland. Staurolite is one of the index minerals that are used to estimate the temperature, depth and pressure at which a rock undergoes metamorphism.
