Keep the young scientist happy for hours with this stone’s fascinating qualities. Witness the magic of this naturally occurring fiber optic material, satin spar gypsum. When placed on any printed surface, the rock’s unusual optic properties will appear to lift images from the page, making them appear on top rather than through it. Yet this fascinating rock, when seen from the side, is not transparent at all!

While ulexite is the original optical stone, often referred to as a TV rock, satin spar gypsum has similar qualities. So what are the differences? Firstly, ulexite is lighter and selenite is denser. When held up to a lite, ulexite often has black specs while selenite does not. When viewing text or images, selenite tends to blur even at slight angles however the image from above is clearer.

Selenite is named after the Greek word for moon, contrary to popular belief, it contains no significant selenium. Satin Spar selenite is a form of fibrous and crystallized gypsum. Other varieties include alabaster, selenite, desert rose and gypsum flower, gypsum rock, ram horn and sand gypsum. It is common to refer to satin spar as selenite.

As a healing stone, this mineral is commonly used to charge or cleanse crystals. It is said to help regenerate the cellular structure and has been used to correct skeletal disorders and to promote flexibility. Selenite also provides clarity of mind, expanding awareness.
