The inside of the geodes in this agate are covered with beautiful tiny, naturally terminated crystals. Agate is a microcrystalline variety of quartz (SiO2) which comes in many colours and varieties. Some banded agates are found on the north shores of the Great Lakes in Ontario, but most originate in the south of Brazil. The original name for agate was chalcedony. The name originates from Chalcedon, an ancient city of Asia Minor, where it was first discovered and used as a gemstone.
