Apophyllite forms in lustrous, transparent crystals that are well-formed and occasionally very large. It usually forms in volcanic zeolite environments in a variety of shapes and colours. Sometimes, other types of zeolites are present on an apophyllite crystal. Zeolites are a group of micro porous minerals made of silicon, aluminum and oxygen. They are referred to as molecular sieves due to their framework of cavities and channels which may collect water and / or small molecules. The framework of each type of zeolite is unique (over 200 varieties are currently known). They form naturally where volcanic rocks and ash layers react with alkaline groundwater. After being deposited they crystallize over thousands to millions of years in shallow marine basins. They have many useful purposes, such as ion exchange, filtering and toxin removal. In healing terms, they are said to help one attune to surrounding energies.
